Elliott / Pattison Custom Racing Sails

Performance sails for the racing sailor.  Proven by winning races; created by careful and consistent attention to detail.

Building competitive racing sails is now, always has been, and always will be vital to us as a company. Not only does it make up an important part of the sailing market, but also serves as the best proving ground for sail shapes and construction techniques.

Performance for the racing sailor means sails that are competitive. While being competitive is measured by winning races, it is created by careful and consistent attention to detail. We use several different computer programs to help analyze sail shape, loading, cloth performance, and to control computerized cutting.

The design process allows us to mold a sail in the computer and evaluate it under different sailing and wind conditions. We start with careful measurements on the boat of items such as mast bend, headstay tension, spreader lengths and locations, and lead positions.

“The design process allows us to mold a sail in the computer and evaluate it under different sailing and wind conditions.”
Proper measurements of these items are critical to building a sail that will properly fit the individual boat and rig. First we input the 2d sail dimensions and rig information. Each sail is then divided into a series of sections where we design in 3d parameters such as amount of camber, camber location, section shape, twist, entry angle, and exit angle.

These sections are all graphed and faired to insure proper shape top to bottom. The last design process allows us to layout fabric on the mold so that we can keep the fabric yarns properly aligned with the load paths in the sail. In conjunction with proper shape design we also work closely with all leading cloth manufacturers to insure the best fabrics are utilized for a particular application. This has meant on several occasions working with the suppliers to design and produce fabrics to meet our specific requirements.
