Headsail Measurement Instructions

Take all Measurements in feet and inches.

  1. Mast Rake: Attach a weight to the end of the main halyard and let it hang down just off the deck. Measure the distance it hangs behind the backside of the mast.
  1. Stem to Waterline: Drop you tape measure down from the bow until it just touches the water. Measure from the water up to the stem fitting.
  2. Stem to Genoa Tack – If you boat is equipped with roller furling, or the genoa tack is raised up above the stem, measure from the stem up to the bearing point of the tack fitting.
  3. Deck to Waterline: At the point abeam of the mast measure, from the waterline up to the intersection of the hull and deck. (to the same place you measure the bottom of the I measurement for #31.)
  4. Jib Track to Waterline: Measure the distance from the water up level with the jib track.
  5. Genoa Track to Waterline: Measure the distance from the water up level with the genoa track.
  6. Bow to Front of Jib Track: Measure from the stem fitting to the front of the Jib Track.
  7. Bow to Back of Jib Track: Measure from the stem fitting to the back of the Jib Track:
  8. Width of jib track from centerline of boat.
  9. Bow to Front of Genoa Track: Measure from the stem fitting to the front of the Genoa Track.
  10. Bow to Back of Genoa Track: Measure from the stem fitting to the back of the Genoa Track.
  11. Width of Genoa track from centerline of boat.
  12. Deck to Clew Height: Measure the height you would like to have the Headsail Clew above the deck.
  13. Maximum Luff: Attach your tape measure to the Genoa halyard (or to the shackle of the furling head swivel if you have furling) and pull it all the way to the top. Measure to the bearing point of the tack fitting (or to the shackle on the furling drum if you have furling). Record the maximum length. We will subtract for stretch and adjustment. If you have a particular length you want the luff to be, record that number instead and note that on the worksheet.
  14. 1st Spreader to Deck: With the tape still attached to the genoa halyard pull it down even with the tip of the first spreader. Measure the distance from the spreader tip down to the deck. (To the same location as the deck in #20, not to the cabin top)
  15. 2nd Spreader to Deck: With the tape still attached to the genoa halyard pull it down even with the tip of the first spreader. Measure the distance from the spreader tip down to the deck. (To the same location as the deck in #20, not to the cabin top)
  16. 3rd Spreader to Deck: With the tape still attached to the genoa halyard pull it down even with the tip of the first spreader. Measure the distance from the spreader tip down to the deck. (To the same location as the deck in #20, not to the cabin top.
  17. I Measurement: Attach your tape measure to the genoa halyard, not the furling swivel, and pull it all the way to the top. Measure down to the deck-hull intersection abeam of the mast. (To the same location as the deck in #20, not to the cabin top). Add on the length of the halyard shackle and any knot or splice to get an accurate measurement.
  18. J Measurement: Measure from the stem fitting to the front side of the mast at deck level.
  19. Furling Type: Record the brand and model number of your furling unit.
  20. Luff Tape Size: If you have some type of headfoil or furling system record the size of luff tape it requires. If you don’t know then please supply the Make and Model of your system.
  21. UV Cover White Dacron: Check this box if you want a white Dacron UV cover. Dacron UV covers are lighter but will not last quite as long as a Sunbrella cover.
  22. UV Cover Sunbrella: Check this box if you want a white or colored Sunbrella UV cover and fill in the name of the color.
  23. Cover on Side: Check which side of the sail the cover is on, Port or Starboard
  24. Foam Luff Pad: Check this box if you want a foam luff pad for Reefing capability.
  25. Tack Offset: Measure from center of headstay to bearing point of headsail tack point.
